Neosho to lay off up to 22 police, firemen
NEOSHO, Mo. (AP) — Neosho city officials say budget problems will force them to lay off up to 22 police officers and firefighters.
Interim City Manager Harlan Moore said Thursday night that the layoffs would save the southwest Missouri city $800,000.
The Joplin Globe reports that another $100,000 will be cut from City Hall after voters rejected a proposed property tax during Tuesday’s election.
The police and fire departments each have about 26 full-time employees, including their chiefs.
The city started the current fiscal year by laying off nine city employees and has not filled four other vacant positions. City employees also took a 3.75 percent pay cut.
