It happened just after midnight Wednesday morning at the Del Taco on South Grand near the campus of St. Louis University.

A 31-year-old man reportedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the 40-year-old victim as they argued outside the drive-thru window.

A suspect was arrested at the scene.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says Hunter M. Pitt of Williamsburg died Tuesday afternoon. The patrol says the boy walked into the bus’ path just before he was hit.

The accident occurred on a Callaway County road west of Williamsburg.

SWANSEA, Ill. (KMOX) -  There’s word of a multi-million dollar settlement in the wrongful death lawsuit against a former Illinois State Trooper.

Matt Mitchell was at the wheel of a squad car going 126 miles per hour when he lost control and crashed into a car on I-64 in November, 2007.

Two sisters in the other vehicle, Jessica and Kelli Uhl, were killed by the impact.

Last year, an attorney for the Uhl family filed suit seeking $46 million in damages.

The parents of the victims will meet with the media Wednesday afternoon at attorney Tom Keefe’s office in Swansea, where terms of the settlement are expected to be unveiled.

Mitchell resigned his position with the Illinois State Police last spring.

TROY, Ill. (KMOX) -  A school board member from Troy, Illinois is charged with murdering his father and stabbing two others.

Gary Schmitt was first charged with stabbing a woman and her daughter in Effingham and after his arrest police say he admitted to beating his father to death last summer.

Prosecutors say Schmitt had recently reconnected with Kimberly Bourland and her 15 year old daughter on Facebook. Schmitt reportedly told investigators he stabbed the pair on orders from God.

While in custody Schmitt reportedly said his father had cancer and that he hit him on the head with a rock.

Schmitt is a member of the Triad School Board.

From faulty brakes to falsified driver logs, for every big rig inspected in 2010 the Missouri State Highway Patrol found an average of three violations.  19-percent were serious enough problems to force either the driver or the vehicle out-of-service.

Captain Tim Hull tells KMOX he believes several years of stepped-up enforcement are making a dent in crashes involving commercial vehicles.   Overall incidents dropped by 11-percent between 2008 and 2009.  “Fatal traffic crashes [involving commercial motor vehicles] were much more dramatic, a decrease of 20.5-percent when comparing ’09 to ’08,” says Hull.  (Note: Missouri traffic crash statistics for 2010 are not yet available.)

The total number of violations cited by troopers was virtually unchanged from 2009 to 2010.

The Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation is taking some supporters to Jefferson City today to meet legislators in person.  Executive Director Bob Baker is asking anyone else to call or e-mail. 

Baker says some proposals would completely scrap the new rules for dog breeders while others would gut the most important provisions.  “You know this passed in the majority of legislative districts in the state.  So if every legislator would listen to their constituents, Proposition B will be left alone and it will stand and dogs will have protection.”

Opponents have expressed concerns the law will impact other agricultural industries in the state.  Supporters have repeatedly denied those claims.

The measure approved by voters in November would require breeding kennels to limit their animals and provide minimum standards for exercise and veterinary care.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois needed a win badly,  to right a ship that had been stuck in rough waters, this month.

There were the losses, one at Wisconsin that the Illini could stomach and another at unranked Penn State that was tougher to take. Then there was the rumor — quickly denied — that freshman Jereme Richmond wanted to transfer after missing practice and heading home before Saturday’s loss to the Badgers.

All of this with No. 1 Ohio State headed to town Saturday.

No. 23 Illinois found the answer to many of its problems Tuesday night, getting 20 points from Brandon Paul, 14 from Richmond and several late free throws that helped hold off 17th-ranked Michigan State, 71-62.

“I think everyone goes through these stretches somewhere in their schedule and we’re just fortunate enough to get (a win),” Illinois coach Bruce Weber said. “Now we’ve got to see if we can get the second one on Saturday, and it’s not going to be any easier.”

The Illini (14-5, 4-3 Big Ten) led by as many as 10, at 53-43, on a 3-pointer by Paul with 13:08 to play.

But they had to hold off a late Spartans charge that made Michigan State coach Tom Izzo feel as though his team was never more than a key shot or two from a potential win.

One late possession neatly summed up the misery for Michigan State (12-6, 4-2).

With the Spartans down 67-62 with just more than 2 minutes to play, Durrell Summers missed a jump shot that was followed by three straight missed chances to tip the ball in. Finally, Mike Davis swooped in to grab a rebound for Illinois and end the suspense.

“We had a chance but we could never get over the hump,” Izzo said. “Give Paul credit; he hit some big shots, some deep shots, some shots coming away from the basket.”

Paul scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half and was the biggest reason why the Illini hit 61.5 percent of their shots during the first 20 minutes.

The Illini led 41-37 at halftime and outscored Michigan State 12-6 over the first 7 minutes of the second half.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Justin Stommes scored 17 points and Eastern Kentucky easily defeated Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 70-50 Tuesday night.

Joshua Jones scored 14 points, Spencer Perrin scored 12 and Jaron Jones had 10 for the Colonels (10-9). Josh Daniel grabbed 13 rebounds as Eastern Kentucky held a 36-25 edge on the boards. The Colonels outscored the Cougars 34-14 in the paint.

The Colonels led 30-26 at the half, but shot 60 percent in the second half to pull away. Stommes scored all seven points in a run that gave Eastern Kentucky a 41-30 lead. The visitors led by as many as 22 points.

Cornelius Chatt scored 13 points to lead the Cougars (5-15).

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Erik Johnson scored the go-ahead goal on a third-period shot that slowly trickled between goalie Jonathan Quick’s pads in the St. Louis Blues’ 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night.

Patrik Berglund snapped a 3-for-38 power play drought in the first period for the Blues, who ended a three-game home losing streak and a 1-6-1 slump overall and leapfrogged a point ahead of Los Angeles in the Western Conference standings. Jaroslav Halak raised his career mark against Los Angeles to 7-1, making 26 saves.

Matt Greene ended a 10-game point drought with his first goal of the season for the Kings, who are in a 2-9 slump. Quick made his first start in three games and made 24 saves, but couldn’t control Johnson’s innocent looking point shot wth 6:47 to go.

Johnson has scored in two straight games and has a point in the last four after getting his fifth goal of the season.

Blues forward T.J. Oshie returned after a 31-game absence from a fractured left ankle and got a loud ovation after he was announced as one of the starters. The Blues were 9-1-2 before Oshie, a first-round pick in 2005, was injured, and Oshie was named the No. 1 star after a solid game.

The Blues remain without forwards David Perron and Andy McDonald, both out with concussions. Enforcer Cam Janssen, among the inactives, put his arm around Perron and hustled him out of the press area between the first and second periods.

Blues defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo was struck in the face by a puck for the second time in four games, felled by Drew Doughty’s shot on a rush in the second period. Colaicovo headed straight for the dressing room and he did not return to the game.

Berglund’s ninth goal, and first in 11 games, capitalized on a 5-on-3 advantage. Greene tied it at 16:21 of the second with his first goal of the season on a shot from the point that made it through traffic.

NOTES: St. Louis has sold out all 24 home games. … Blues D Roman Polak had only 14 penalty minutes in 20 games before fighting the Kings’ Kyle Clifford in the first period. … The Kings have been outscored 39-28 during their slump. … The Kings are 0-5-1 against the Blues since December 5, 2009.
